A delegation from Bonaire comprised of Commissioner Edsel Winklaar and Candice Adams Kimmel, the TCB Representative in North America, attended  the annual Routes Americas event which took place February 23-25, 2014 in San Salvador, El Salvador.  Over the three days of the event, discussions were held with Avianca Columbia, COPA, GOL, JetBlue, American/US Airways, Southwest Airlines, Delta, United, Insel Air and InterCaribbean Airways.

“We had the opportunity to meet with many of the airlines serving the region to strengthen our relationships, discuss route development strategies and negotiate potential future routes. I left San Salvador very optimistic about Bonaire’s prospects for new service,” said Commissioner Winklaar. “While not all carriers felt the time was appropriate to introduce service to Bonaire, others were very interested in the prospect. I have no doubt that discussions and decisions taken at the event itself will directly shape Bonaire’s future air network,” he concluded.

Since returning from the event, advanced negotiations for additional capacity from Delta and United have taken place and are close to a positive conclusion.

Discussions with Delta center on additional rotations from Atlanta starting in the fall and running through peak season.

United has agreed to enter into a market support agreement for the Houston flight in September and has offered to negotiate the same kind of agreement for Newark in September and October.

Within Latin America, GOL, COPA and Avianca were very interested in Bonaire and have requested specific follow-up from the island including traffic data, market size forecasts and dive shop data by country.

All carriers the Bonaire delegation met with were engaged by the prospect of direct service, and have requested follow-up including additional traffic and marketing data.
