Welcome to the official Bonaire Website

There are many cave formations found on Bonaire. Several are readily accessible while others lie hidden and filled with water.  Regardless of where they are, they are a crucial part of the islands ecosystem.  The caves that are filled with water are part of an extensive aquifer that is used to help the farmers grow crops and the shallower formations serve as a water source for feral goats and donkeys.  The other mammals that benefit are the numerous bats that spend their days hanging upside down in the caves until sunset.  Then they swarm out of their subterranean shelters for a night of eating…consuming thousands of mosquitoes and other pesky insects!  Other bats are working to sip the nectar from night blooming cactus and doing the same job that bees accomplish during the day.  By spreading pollen these night -shift workers play an important role in keeping the ecosystem operating!!

For many years, visitors have entered the caves to view the ancient drawings and to marvel at the stalactites’ and stalagmites.  With time, more and more folks have taken to spelunking and took great interest in visiting our caves.  With the increased interest came the problem of too many people in the caves at once and not enough guidance from qualified professionals. It is now the policy of STINAPA that visitors to the caves use an approved guide who is well versed in the protocols suggested to minimize any negative impact on this delicate system.  Buddy Dive, Bonaire Eco Experience, Bonaire Guide services, Plaza Resort Bonaire, Captain Don’s Habitat and Black Durgon Inn have all passed extensive training courses and will help spelunkers to enjoy the cave experience. These natural formations are an important part of our heritage as well and your help in preserving them for future generations to enjoy is greatly appreciated.
