A year ago, journalist Rob Aarsen visited Bonaire. He wrote a nice article that was published in the Belgian dive magazine Hippocampus. This bi-monthly magazine is distributed to more than 10.000 members of the Belgium diving federation.
In his six-page article Aarsen writes about the way Bonaire is looking for balance. The protected underwater world is one of its biggest unique selling points and therefore attracts a lot of divers. That causes an additional burden for the reef, so extra attention to conservation is really important. Luckily divers don’t mind paying a nature fee to help the preservation.
The article also contains an interview with Elsmarie Beukeboom from Stichting Nationale Parken (STINAPA). She emphasizes that it’s very important for tourism on Bonaire to develop into a sustainable source of income.
