There are many beautiful bike trails on Bonaire, both on and off-road. Due to the smaller distances and flatness, cycling is a great way to discover Bonaire. Various routes you can easily interrupt for sightseeing, a stop at the beaches or some nice restaurants. Since July 2012 charging stations for electric bikes can be found on the island.?
The southern route is approximately 33 km long. It leads you on a well-paved road along the west coast. To the slave huts, the southern point of Bonaire where the Willemstoren lighthouse is situated, the east coast and the beautiful lagoon at Sorobon where several beach clubs are located. Along the mangrove forest you’ll continue the ride down winds and back towards the center of Kralendijk.?
The northern route is 32 km long and leads you on an excellent paved road along the west coast. The scenic route takes you along the famous dive site 1000 steps and the old Land house of Karpata. You will pass the Gotomeer, where you’ll have a beautiful view of the Washington Slagbaai Park. Eventually you end up in the village of Rincon where a number of local restaurants can be found. The scenic road along the east coast brings you back in to center of Kralendijk. ?
Are you looking for some more adventure on the bike? There are great off-road possibilities on Bonaire as well. A good mountain bike with TL tires is required. There are several off-road mountain bike trials on Bonaire where even professionals ride official matches. There are many possible routes, but it can be difficult to find the correct trials. It’s also allowed to discover the Washington Slagbaai National Park by bike. Again, because of the off-road condititions, a mountain bike is necessary.
